Push your reputation down to -40, wait for Muzan’s message, find him at night, accept and take the Biwa Bell into his domain. Inside, he hands you the quest: collect nine Spider Lilies, escort Dr. Higoshima to a marked point, then drink Muzan’s Blood.
The order matters more than the individual steps, because three of them are gated behind night and one of them destroys your slayer progress. Before you start, unlock Wall Climb and Double Jump from the Movement branch of the skill tree. Community sources put the practical minimum at level 4, which is the earliest you can have both, and the quest’s escort step is impossible without them.
One structural point to decide before you commit: the demon route replaces the slayer route, so you do not run Final Selection afterwards. That claim comes from a single outlet rather than a consensus, but every route description we cross-checked is consistent with it. If you want the slayer title from Final Selection, earn it first.
Two pieces of preparation make the rest of the quest dramatically faster. Set your spawn at the Bamboo Grove Sanctuary crystal, because that area is both the densest Spider Lily zone and the closest thing to a hub for the escort step. And clear your inventory of anything you are not willing to lose, since the task involves a long run through hostile NPCs.
How do you drop your reputation to -40?
Kill Slayer NPCs. Each kill costs nine reputation, so five kills take you to -45 and past the threshold. A Civilian NPC is worth only one point, which means forty kills for the same result, and that is the route you should treat as a fallback rather than a plan.
The target selection rule matters more than the farming spot. Only attack NPCs whose name is exactly Civilian. If the name carries an icon or a star, it is a quest NPC and killing it is not the trade you think you are making. Multiple walkthroughs repeat this warning because the punishment is invisible until you check your reputation number.
For slayer NPCs, the two documented farming areas are Mistfall Harbor and the snowy region west of the bear area. Mistfall Harbor is the more convenient of the two because it sits near the starting village and needs no cold-damage route to reach. Civilians, for the slower route, are found in the starting village, with one source placing them around Windy Peak instead.
While your reputation falls, watch the left side of your screen. Every ten points you lose, a message from Muzan appears there. Those messages are also your progress indicator: if you have not seen one recently, you have not gone as deep as you think.
Do not bother optimising this step beyond the two routes above. Five slayer kills is a few minutes of work, and the reputation system has no partial credit or shortcut documented by any source we checked.
Where does Muzan spawn at night, and how do you reach him?
Muzan appears only at night and not in every server, so server hopping is faster than searching the same map twice. There are four well-documented patrol areas plus one commonly missed spawn near the starting village. None have been reported in later-game regions.
| Location | Route | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mistfall Harbor | Lower-right of the map, near the starting village | Most common report; check the main dirt road and the steps above it |
| Hidden Mist Village | West gate, downhill, through the torii tunnel, turn right and drop, cross the trees with the bridge on your left, enter the torii between two towers | Muzan patrols the first few paths inside |
| Snow Village | West gate, tunnel, turn left into the bear area, through two torii into the snowfield, past Old Trapper Retsu, uphill then immediately left uphill, follow the yellow NPC icon for Iceveil Guard Shiro to the crystal | Muzan patrols from the crystal, across the torii and stone bridge, toward the Domae boss area |
| Iceveil Valley | From the bear area, turn left into the snow and follow the stone path uphill | The zone applies constant cold damage, so bring healing |
| Wilderness path | West of the starting village, around the big tree near the red bridge | Single source; described as the most commonly missed spawn |
The Hidden Mist Village route is the one to memorise first if you are already farming slayer NPCs in Mistfall Harbor, because the two areas sit close together. The Snow Village route is longer and applies cold damage the whole way, so it is the better choice only if you have already placed a spawn crystal there.
Because Muzan’s presence is server-specific, the efficient loop is: enter a server, check the nearest spawn point at night, and leave if he is not there. Two server hops beat one full map sweep. One outlet mentions a purchasable Muzan tracker that skips the manual search, but nobody else confirms it exists, so treat it as an unverified convenience.
The patrol areas are also where you will spend your first night failing. Muzan is not a stationary NPC; he walks a route. If you reach a spawn area and see nothing, walk the patrol line rather than standing at the entrance.
What happens after you accept Muzan’s offer?
You receive the Biwa Bell, use it from your inventory to enter Muzan’s domain, and talk to him a second time inside. That second conversation is what actually starts the Muzan Quest, and it is the step people skip because the first conversation feels like the quest already began.
The domain is a separate instance, not a location on the main map. Community walkthroughs are consistent that the bell is the only entry method, which is why losing or discarding it is the single most damaging mistake in this quest line. Keep it after the transformation.
Inside, the quest objectives resolve into three tasks: gather nine Spider Lilies, escort Dr. Higoshima to the marked drop-off, and drink Muzan’s Blood. Some sources compress the list, but the sequence above is the order the objectives become actionable, and the blood is always the final step.
The blood is not automatic. After you complete the collection and escort objectives, Muzan’s Blood arrives as an inventory item, and you drink it yourself from the inventory to trigger the transformation. Nothing about the process is timed, so there is no rush between objectives, and you can bank the Spider Lilies across multiple nights.
Where do you find all 9 Spider Lilies?
Spider Lilies spawn only at night. They are glowing blue flowers with a pickup prompt, and during the day every spawn point is completely empty. The densest area by a wide margin is Bamboo Grove Sanctuary, which is why the recommended spawn crystal sits there.
| Area | Reported spawn points |
|---|---|
| Bamboo Grove Sanctuary | Around the spawn crystal, under the bridge beside the crystal, the bamboo clearing, the riverbank and shoreline edges, the grass slope and cliff edge overlooking Mistfall Harbor, the Water Training area, behind a house near Mistfall Harbor |
| Hidden Mist Village | The outer flower cliff, where up to two can appear at once |
| Elsewhere | Behind Thunder King Zentaro, and beside the tree at Hidden Mist Shrine |
The Water Training area inside Bamboo Grove is worth singling out because both red and blue lilies spawn there according to the same source, which makes it the highest-yield single spot on the list.
The practical obstacle is competition rather than geography. A busy public server rarely holds nine lilies at once because other players are collecting them for the same quest. The two fixes are hopping to a quieter server or using a private server, and both are reported as working. Our Spider Lily location guide breaks the Bamboo Grove spots down further if you want a walking order rather than a list.
Because the flowers are night-only, plan the collection around the day cycle instead of fighting it. Use daylight hours for the reputation grind and the night hours for lilies, and the quest stops feeling like it is stalling.
How do you deliver Dr. Higoshima and finish the quest?
Dr. Higoshima stands on a pillar or cliff top on the east side of Bamboo Grove Sanctuary, toward Verdant Cliffs near the stone bridge, marked with a red exclamation point. He also only appears at night. Turn on shift lock, Wall Climb the rock face, Double Jump the gaps, pick him up and run straight to the white marker.
The pickup triggers the hardest thirty seconds of the quest. A large group of Mizunoto slayers spawns the moment you lift him, and they respawn indefinitely, so fighting them is a losing loop. The documented approach is to ignore them completely and sprint to the marker. Everything about this step rewards routing over combat: know your line before you grab him, and do not stop moving.
Set your spawn crystal at the Bamboo Grove Sanctuary crystal before you attempt the escort. If you die mid-carry, respawning next to the grove saves you the walk back and the second attempt usually succeeds.
Once he is delivered, the objectives close out and Muzan’s Blood becomes available. Drink it from your inventory to transform. The animation plays as red and green smoke, the Demon title appears on your profile, and the confirmation that it worked is mechanical rather than cosmetic: daylight starts burning you.
What changes once you drink Muzan’s Blood?
You become a demon permanently, gain the Demon title, and start burning in direct sunlight. Demon progression then runs on souls rather than experience, with five documented progression tiers. Those tier thresholds come from a single community source, so treat the exact numbers as reported rather than confirmed.
| Demon tier | Souls for this tier | Cumulative souls | Reported stat gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weak Demon | 0 | 0 | Starting state |
| Strong Demon | 180 | 180 | +15 HP, +1 Strength |
| Really Strong Demon | 360 | 540 | +20 HP, +2 Strength |
| Deadly Demon | 540 | 1,080 | +25 HP, +2 Strength |
| Invincible Demon | 720 | 1,800 | +35 HP, +1 Strength |
Souls come from killing enemies and picking up what they drop. The documented farm is the bears near the starting village, which drop the weak soul type, with the Mother Bear world boss giving more per kill. Whether the Mother Bear drops the weak or the strong soul type is disputed between two outlets, so do not plan a route around that detail.
A 2x Soul gamepass exists in the shop and accelerates the whole progression, according to one outlet. If you are grinding souls anyway, the bears near the starting village are the fastest repeatable source documented, and they are close enough to a spawn point that death costs you very little.
Two things stay true after transformation. The Biwa Bell remains your only way back into the domain, so keep it. And you should transform at the lowest level you reasonably can, because every level you gain afterwards also raises your demon progression stats, which means arriving late wastes levels you could have spent as a demon.
How do you survive sunlight as a demon?
You have three options: the Kamado clan’s sun immunity, a sun-proof head accessory, or staying in caves, shade and underground areas during the day. Kamado is the cleanest fix because it costs no equipment slot, and the headwear route is the one most players end up using.
| Headwear | Source | Drop rate or price |
|---|---|---|
| Black Amigasa | Elara’s clothing shop in Mistfall Harbor | 10,000 Wen, no stat bonus, easiest to get |
| Bamboo Sandogasa | Sealed Cache T1 | 5% |
| Straw Fringe Hat | Ouwigahara Chest | 5% |
| Akatsuki Straw Hat | Black Marketer | Not documented |
| Classic Straw Hat | Sealed Cache T3 | 3% |
| Flame Amigasa | Ouwigahara Chest | 3% |
The Black Amigasa is the practical first target because it is bought rather than farmed. Elara’s shop is not open when you first arrive, though. To unlock it, find MoldySugar in the starting village, the NPC with the pink hair icon, take the package they give you to Elara the Tailor in Mistfall Harbor, and the shop opens. Stock rotates hourly, so the hat may not be on the shelf during your first visit. The same shop system also sells The Sun Hat, another daylight protection item.
The currency is written as Wen here because that is the spelling the code rewards and most outlets use. One outlet writes the same amount as Yen, which is a naming difference rather than a second price. Our money and trading guide covers how to actually accumulate the 10,000 Wen if you are starting from nothing.
If you would rather not pay at all, shade works. Demons take burning damage from direct sunlight, not from daytime itself, so caves, interiors, dense tree cover and underground routes all let you travel during the day. The tradeoff is that the map’s useful routes are not designed around cover, which is why most players end up buying the hat.
What is still unconfirmed about the demon route?
Several specifics. The Spider Lily count is reported as nine by community guides while the main narrative walkthrough never gives a number. The soul values and tier thresholds come from a single source. And whether the Mother Bear drops weak or strong souls is directly contradicted between two outlets.
The list of open questions worth knowing before you commit:
- Soul values per drop. One source gives five souls for a standard mob and ten for an elite, with more from world bosses. Nobody else publishes numbers.
- Progression tier thresholds. The 180 / 360 / 540 / 720 table is single-source and unverified.
- Mother Bear’s soul type. Two outlets disagree; only the fact that world bosses give more is consistent.
- Muzan’s late-game spawns. Every source covers the same four or five areas near the starting regions. No later-zone spawn point has been documented at all.
- The Muzan tracker. One outlet describes buying one to skip the search. Uncorroborated.
- The demon route replacing Final Selection. Single source, though consistent with every other route description.
- The transformation-level advice. The recommendation to transform as early as possible is single-source.
- Demon art spins. Whether the art roll uses the same spin currency as clan rerolls is unresolved, and one outlet implies a separate pool.
- The number of arts on offer. Nine Blood Demon Arts exist at launch, and one outlet also gives a 70% success rate for the art roll itself. That probability is single-source and should not be treated as confirmed.
For all of these, the game itself is the final authority. Check your own progression menu for the soul thresholds, and check the quest log for the lily count rather than trusting any published table.
What is this page based on?
This page is built from Community Verified sources: Destructoid’s Muzan quest walkthrough, TechWiser, games.gg and Gamezebo, cross-checked on 2026-09-23. The reputation threshold, the nine-per-kill slayer penalty, the night-only spawn rule, the Biwa Bell loop and the Bamboo Grove Spider Lily cluster are the claims here that multiple independent outlets reproduce.
Everything thinner is labelled in place. The demon progression tier table, the per-drop soul values and the Mother Bear conflict come from single outlets. The list of sun-proof headwear is cross-checked, but the drop rates attached to the sealed cache and Ouwigahara items come from one source. The claim that the demon path replaces Final Selection, and the advice to transform at a low level, are both single-source.
The route descriptions are written for the balance state after v0.98, and nothing in either documented patch touched the demon quest line. If you are reading this after a later patch, the update history is where patch-by-patch changes are tracked. For the next step after transforming, see the Blood Demon Arts tier list, and for the sun-immunity clan itself see best clans for beginners.
