FAQ

Where is the Flame Breathing trainer in Slayers 2?
Rengu stands on a rooftop near the long red bridge on the road out of Mistfall Village, not at ground level, so look up once you reach the wooden houses. The route runs from Bamboo Grove toward Mistfall Harbor, across the suspension bridge, then up the cliff past the Rengu boss area.
How many Demon Horns does Flame Breathing cost?
Three independent outlets report 10 Demon Horns at level 25, the cheapest Demon Horns bill along with Thunder. No source confirms an extra Wen or Beast Core charge for Flame, so read Rengu's own dialogue box and treat that number as final.
Is Flame Breathing good in Slayers 2?
Beebom's post-patch list puts Flame in S tier, and it is one of three styles that came out ahead in the v0.98 balance patch, with Blazing Universe's range rising from 35 to 45 and Flame Undulation's counter extended to skills. It is a PvE-first style rather than a duelist's pick.
Why is Rengoku the best clan for Flame Breathing?
Rengoku is the burn clan: it adds burn damage, strengthens the burn applied by basic attacks, extends combos through Indomitable Will, and grants fire resistance. It sits at Supreme rarity with a 0.1 percent roll, which is why most players reroll spins chasing it rather than farming it.
Does burn damage trigger counters after v0.110?
No. Patch v0.110 changed damage-over-time ticks so they no longer count as hits, which means burn no longer consumes or triggers counter windows. Your real attacks still do, so timing your Flame Tiger and Purgatory around an opponent's counter is now the deciding factor.

What does Flame Breathing actually give you?

Flame Breathing is a burn-first damage style with five skill slots, one ranged option and a genuine counter button. Its damage profile lines up with the burn passives of a Supreme-rarity clan, which is why Rengoku plus Flame is treated as the strongest PvE pairing in the game.

Every breathing style uses the same five slots — Z, X, C, V and B — and the moves must be bought individually with skill points from the skill tree, which opens with M. The game hands out roughly three points per level, and node depth means you should bank points before you unlock a style rather than after. Community pages report one specialised style at a time, but that rule comes from a single competitor site, so treat it as unconfirmed.

Flame’s identity is sustained pressure. The kit applies burn on top of direct damage, and the v0.98 patch made two of its moves strictly better: Blazing Universe reaches further, and Flame Undulation can now counter skills rather than only basic attacks. That second change is the one that matters in PvP, because a counter that only answers light attacks is trivial to play around. The breathing styles tier list places these shifts next to the pre-patch rankings.

How do you unlock Flame Breathing?

Flame Breathing needs level 25 plus 10 Demon Horns, and nothing else has been confirmed by more than one outlet. You must be a human Slayer character, complete the trainer’s task chain, defeat the Flame Trainee, and then buy your chosen move nodes from the skill tree.

  • Level 25 is the shared floor across all eight styles — Water, Flame, Thunder, Wind, Stone, Sound, Insect and Serpent. It is Community Verified through five or more outlets, but Ouw Productions has never published a level requirement.
  • Wall Climb and Double Jump are the standard trainer prerequisites, and Flame is a case where they genuinely matter: the route involves climbing a cliff face, and Rengu himself stands on a rooftop you have to reach vertically.
  • Demons cannot learn breathing styles at all, since the demon path runs on Blood Demon Arts. Decide your faction before you start farming horns.
  • The shared training checklist covers Meditation, Push-ups, Boulder Push, Boulder Split, Aim Training and a Parkour Dungeon; the style-specific step is the Trainee fight at the end.

If the level gate is what is holding you back, the early quest chain through Windy Peak and the bear area is the fastest route, and the leveling guide breaks down which quests pay enough experience to matter.

Where is Rengu and how do you reach the rooftop?

Rengu stands on a rooftop beside the long red bridge on the road out of Mistfall Village. Two sources describe the same approach — run from Bamboo Grove toward Mistfall Harbor, cross the suspension bridge and the water, climb the cliff past the Rengu boss area and the long red bridge — but you have to look up once you arrive.

  1. Leave Bamboo Grove heading for Mistfall Harbor. You are moving from the level 13–25 bamboo zone into the level 10–25 harbor zone, so the run stays safe.
  2. Cross the suspension bridge and the water beyond it. This is the landmark that separates the bamboo side from the Mistfall side of the map.
  3. Climb the cliff wall past the Rengu boss area, keeping the long red bridge in sight. The bridge is the anchor landmark: if you cannot see it, you have taken the wrong slope.
  4. At the top, walk behind the main wooden house. Rengu is on the smaller roof or eaves behind it, above head height, which is why players who walk past at street level report that he does not exist.
  5. Interact once you are level with him. The chat prompt only appears when you are close, and the climb is the reason Wall Climb sits on the prerequisite list even though the unlock cost does not mention it.

Slayers 2 has no in-game world map, so every route in the game is described by landmarks rather than coordinates. If you would rather not run the whole way, finishing the Book of Guidance quest unlocks fast travel and the Lost Pages route is a short job.

Two naming traps sit on this route. Rengu is also the name of the boss area you climb past, so do not assume the trainer and the encounter share a location by accident — the trainer is on the roof above the area, not in it. Rengu is also not Rengoku: one letter group apart, and Rengoku is a clan, not an NPC. If you are looking for the clan rather than the trainer, the clan reroll guide and the best clans for beginners cover that system instead.

The location evidence is messy enough to flag. Sportsrant’s summary table places Rengu in a house outside the red bridge in Mistfall, but the same site’s dedicated article says he hides on a rooftop in the Forgotten Ruins. BloxInformer puts him on the dam at Mistfall Harbor and then contradicts itself further down the same page by saying he is on a house. We follow the two descriptions that agree with each other, the rooftop behind the wooden house near the long red bridge, and treat the other two as unreliable.

What materials does Rengu ask for?

Three independent outlets report 10 Demon Horns at level 25, which is the cheapest Demon Horns bill in the game alongside Thunder. No source confirms an additional Wen or Beast Core charge for Flame, so the dialogue box in front of you is the only number that settles it.

Requirement Community-reported amount Where it comes from Confidence
Level 25 shared gate for all eight styles Community Verified
Demon Horns 10 Hoyuzo Subordinates in the cave behind the Bamboo Grove waterfall (one each), Iceveil Valley High Demons (two each) Community Verified, three outlets agree
Wen none reported for Flame specifically general Wen range across styles is 4,000 to 10,000 not confirmed for Flame
Beast Cores none reported for Flame specifically Beast Born Demons near Mistfall and the village by Tom, at night not confirmed for Flame

The silence on Wen is worth taking seriously rather than filling in. Outlets that list Wen for Water give 5,000 and outlets that list it for Wind give 5,000, yet the same tables leave Flame blank, which suggests this trainer genuinely does not charge cash. Ouw Productions has never published material costs for any style, so nobody outside the game can do better than a report.

Ten horns is roughly an hour of farming if you know where to look. The cave behind the Bamboo Grove waterfall drops one per Hoyuzo Subordinate, and Iceveil Valley High Demons drop two each, but the snow zone applies continuous cold damage, so bring warm gear if you go that way. The Demon Horns and Beast Cores guide compares both loops, and if you are short on Wen for gear rather than materials, the money and trading guide covers Coin Pouches.

What are the Flame Breathing moves and keybinds?

The working Flame layout is Z Unknowing Fire, X Blazing Universe, C Flame Undulation, V Flame Tiger and B Purgatory. One outlet supplies the whole layout, so treat the mapping as provisional; the only point with independent agreement is that the B slot is Purgatory.

Key Move Notes
Z Unknowing Fire the opener and the safest poke in the kit
X Blazing Universe range increased from 35 to 45 in v0.98
C Flame Undulation counter tool, extended to skills in v0.98
V Flame Tiger has a held variant whose startup was shortened in v0.98
B Purgatory the ultimate, confirmed by a second source

Because only one source documents the layout, do not memorise it as if it were official. The practical check is simple: buy the nodes, open the skill tree, and read what each slot actually holds. Wind and Serpent are the two styles whose keybinds have genuine multi-source agreement, so if slot accuracy matters to you, the Wind Breathing page and the Serpent Breathing page are the safer references.

What is not in doubt is the shape of the kit. The documented layout gives Flame one ranged option, one counter, one move with a held variant and one ultimate, which makes it a mid-range style that wants to control the distance rather than brawl inside it. Blazing Universe reaching 45 after the patch is what makes that spacing plan work.

What did patch v0.98 change for Flame Breathing?

Patch v0.98 on 21 September 2026 gave Flame two buffs that both survived scrutiny. Blazing Universe’s range rose from 35 to 45, and Flame Undulation’s counter was extended from basic attacks to skills as well. A third change, Flame Tiger’s held startup, is reported by one outlet only.

Change Detail Confidence
Blazing Universe range 35 to 45 Community Verified, two sources agree
Flame Undulation counter now answers skills, not just M1 attacks Community Verified, two sources agree
Flame Tiger, held startup cut from 0.15s to 0.08s single source

The Undulation change is the structural one. Before the patch, the counter only punished basic attacks, so any opponent who opened with a skill simply ignored it. Now the counter covers the same inputs your opponent actually uses in a duel, which turns Undulation from a defensive formality into a real punish tool. The range buff is smaller but matters in group content, where standing further back means fewer stray hits from the boss while you keep contributing damage.

For PvE the patch changed very little, because burn damage did not move. Flame’s farm value comes from the clan pairing rather than from the style’s own numbers, and that means the buff mostly helped the PvP side of a style that tier lists still describe as PvE-first. The update history page carries the full v0.98 and v0.110 breakdowns with per-claim confidence.

Why is the Rengoku clan the best partner for Flame Breathing?

Rengoku is the burn clan. It adds burn damage, strengthens the burn applied by basic attacks, extends combos through Indomitable Will, grants fire resistance, and blocks other top clans from extending their own Indomitable Will combos against you. Every one of those passives points at the same playstyle Flame already has.

Clan Rarity Roll chance What it adds to a Flame build
Rengoku Supreme 0.1% burn damage, burn-enhanced M1 attacks, combo extension, fire resistance
Agatsuma Mythic 0.9% Thunder specialisation, so it contributes nothing to Flame
Kocho Legendary 4% poison focus, which needs Insect rather than Flame
Urokodaki, Sabito Rare 12% generic passives, no burn synergy

Both major clan tier lists agree that Rengoku sits at the top of the table, and Destructoid specifically flags the Flame plus Rengoku pairing as the reason it ranked the style above its raw numbers. The catch is the roll rate: Supreme clans appear at 0.1 percent, an average of one in a thousand spins, so most players either take a strong generic clan or budget spins deliberately. The clan tier list compares the whole pool, and the clan reroll guide explains what each spin costs you before you burn a stack.

Agatsuma deserves a mention purely to rule it out. It is the Thunder clan, its damage amplification and low-health bonus only fire on Thunder abilities, and Destructoid only grades it S when paired with that style. If you are running Flame, an Agatsuma roll is not a Flame clan — the Thunder Breathing page explains what it is actually for.

What is the best Flame Breathing combo right now?

No published frame data exists, so treat this as a pattern rather than a guaranteed chain. Hold mid-range with Blazing Universe now that it reaches 45, use Flame Undulation as a reaction rather than an opener, then push in with Flame Tiger once the counter has been spent, and finish with Purgatory.

  1. Start at range and poke with Blazing Universe. The extended reach is the point of the v0.98 buff, and it lets you test an opponent’s block without committing to an animation.
  2. React with Flame Undulation when they commit to a skill. Since the patch it answers skills as well as basic attacks, which makes it the only true defensive button in the kit.
  3. Step in with Flame Tiger once their counter window is gone. The held version starts faster after the patch, so it doubles as an engage.
  4. Land Purgatory as the finisher. It is the ultimate, so it is also the move that gets punished hardest if you throw it into a live counter.
  5. Keep basic attacks flowing between cooldowns. Rengoku’s passive boosts the burn applied by M1 hits, so idle time costs a burn build more than it costs any other style.

The biggest mistake with Flame is opening with the ultimate. Purgatory is the finisher, so throwing it into a live counter window is the most punishing error in the kit, and an opponent who has been holding their counter will take the trade every time. If you want a style that plays the opposite way, with short animations and a stun you can throw from a bad position, the Water Breathing page and the Sound Breathing page are the closest alternatives in the current patch.

How strong is Flame Breathing in the current meta?

Beebom’s 22 September list, published after the balance patch, puts Flame in S tier. Destructoid’s 20 September snapshot ranked it B and described it as a PvE style that only shines beside Rengoku. Both are consistent: nothing in v0.98 or v0.110 changed how the clan pairing works.

Source Date and version Flame’s rank Note
Destructoid 20 September, pre-balance B called a PvE pick, strongest with Rengoku, before the buffs
AllThings.how v0.98 write-up S in the versatility list grouped with Wind below Water in the same article
slayers2-game.wiki v0.98 meta page S grouped with Water and Wind
Beebom 22 September, post-balance S the most recent dated list

The disagreement here is narrower than it looks. The pre-patch B came with an explicit note that the style was carried by its clan rather than its own numbers, and the post-patch S rankings all land after the same two buffs. What has not changed is the shape of the recommendation: Flame is a farm and boss style first, and a duel style second. If you want the poison-and-combo route instead, the Insect Breathing page covers the style that pairs with the Kocho clan, and the bosses and raids guide covers where a burn build earns its keep.

Long term, Flame has one more reward worth chasing: the Flame Perfected title, which unlocks at maximum mastery with the style and adds a small damage factor to breathing styles once equipped. The title system separates equipped buffs from permanent passives and only allows three buff titles at a time, which the titles guide breaks down slot by slot.

What is this page based on?

This page is built from Community Verified sources: AllThings.how’s v0.98 patch breakdown and trainer location guide, Beebom’s post-patch tier list and clan tiers, Destructoid’s pre-patch tier list and clan list, games.gg’s trainer table and Pro Game Guides’ trainer hub, cross-checked on 23 September 2026, with disputed claims marked inline.

Two things on this page sit at single-source confidence. The full Flame keybind layout comes from one outlet, with only the B slot independently confirmed, and the Flame Tiger startup figure comes from the same v0.98 write-up that the rest of the patch data comes from. The Rengu route descriptions also contradict each other across two pages on the same site, so the rooftop we describe is the version two independent sources agree on rather than a settled fact.
